NINE.5 | Ekaya x Suchi Reddy
Objects —
Introducing Nine.5, a limited edition of collectible furniture resulting from the collaboration between Suchi Reddy and Ekaya Banaras, the 100-year-old New Delhi based textile atelier.
Resulting from a five-year dialogue between Suchi Reddy, Palak Shah, and Melanie Courbet, the collection of sculptural seats upholstered with Ekaya’s hand-woven Banarsi textile, is a tribute to India’s rich cultural heritage and ongoing craftsmanship legacy.
Titled Nine.5, the collection makes reference to the 9.5 yards in a saree. The flowing shapes mimic the curves of a saree on the body.
For the works, Suchi Reddy designed custom silk fabrics based on the zero, which was first introduced as a numeral into mathematics by Hindu astronomer and mathematician Brahmagupta in 628.
The 9.5 works range in scale from furniture pieces like a chaise and settee to a light fixture and a small sculptural object (.5), which acts as a balancing weight and sculpture in its own right.
