71% for MoMA PS1

In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, MoMA PS1 and MoMA’s Department of Architecture and Design called for ideas – in the form of a five-minute film – that would demonstrate possible solutions to the threat of rising sea levels in the Rockaways. In collaboration with Horns + Tails Productions, we made “71%”.

Our film put forward a new model to help coastal communities deal with a natural disaster. Our response involved designing geographically-specific, but multifaceted, breakwaters that would be situated in the landscape as well as near local infrastructure and buildings.

We imagined a secondary coastline for the world, that would connect countries through a string of culturally specific floodable gardens, parks, bridges, and skate parks that could both protect our primary coastline and act as a cultural connector.

(The title, 71%, refers to the percentage of the earth covered in water.)
