Shaped by Air, Lexus + ICA Miami
Public Art —
Shaped by Air is a public installation for Lexus on view in the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) sculpture garden in Miami, Florida. Inspired by the brand’s sustainable ethos, which is exemplified by the Lexus Electrified Sport, the ethereal and abstracted installation expresses the vehicle as being in harmony with its environment.
Abstracted mesh forms, inspired by the curves and lines of the car, are enveloped in mist and light to create a three-dimensional illusion of the vehicle moving through nature. To amplify the immersive and dynamic design, the vehicle is surrounded by organic, leaflike shapes, subtly calling to mind the cutouts of Henri Matisse. Shaped by Air is also accompanied by eco-terrazzo benches inspired by the shapes of the vehicle, providing areas for rest and relaxation, as well as wireless charging stations activated by a solar-charged battery.
Fabrication support was provided by Matchless Build and lighting design by Reveal Design Group.
Concurrent with this installation, Lexus has partnered with Refraction, the largest artist-run and owned web3 community to bring the installation on-chain into the web3 space. An NFT inspired by the installation is available as a limited mint during Miami Art Week at the IRL Refraction Festival from November 29–30, and is available to all ICA visitors via a QR code.
